Google reportedly to release Android 5.0 ‘Jelly Bean’ by June 2012

Before Ice Cream Sandwich has managed to reach more than 1% of Android devices, reports are suggesting that its successor, Android 5.0 ‘Jelly Bean’, could launch as soon as June.

The news comes in the form of a Digitimes report, which is known for being hit-and-miss with its accuracy, but cites supply chain sources that state the search giant will seek to release its new Android platform to provide competition to Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system, which will debut in the third quarter.

With Android 5.0 thought to deliver yet more features for tablet devices, Taiwanese suppliers are already to deliver dual-OS tablets and notebooks, which will be able to instantly switch between Google’s and Microsoft’s mobile-friendly platforms.

Despite officially launching with the release of the Galaxy Nexus at the end of last year, Ice Cream Sandwich has yet to reach the majority of new Android smartphones and is only expected to receive a boost in take-up when the world’s biggest mobile vendors release new devices at Mobile World Congress, commencing at the end of the month.

By February, Gingerbread (in particular versions Android versions 2.3.3 - 2.3.7) accounted for 58.6% of Android gadgets, while the latest flavour accounted for just one percent of devices.

It is believed that Google will use its new Android release to galvanise its re-entry into the notebook and netbook markets, after Chromebook sales failed to take off. As a result, Google’s partners are reported to be “conservative” about utilising the new platform.

Google prepping Android 5.0: report

It seems like only yesterday that Google introduced its latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, to the world. At the time, I suggested that it might be "the most important Android release ever."

And for a good reason: Ice Cream Sandwich, which marked the fourth version of Android, included some major changes to the Android interface and sought to make Android a tasty option for both smart phones and tablets.

Apparently, however, Ice Cream Sandwich may not have been tasty enough and faced with adoption lower than expected, Digitimes is reporting that Google may try to lure manufacturers with a new treat in the second quarter of this year. That treat: Android 5, dubbed Jelly Bean.

Android 5.0 Jelly Bean Mobile Operating System May Arrive in Spring 2012

Are you digging Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich? Well, don't get too comfortable. Citing Taiwan-based supply chain makers, the rumor-mongers at DigiTimes report that Google is pushing out the tablet-friendlier Android 5.0 "Jelly Bean" version of its Android operating system in the second quarter of this year.

Even though Ice Cream Sandwich just came out of its wrapper, the looming release of Windows 8 has supposedly inspired Google to speed up its release schedule. DigiTimes also cites the less-than-stellar adoption of Android 4.0 as an impetus to update but, when you consider that most Android phones don't even have Ice Cream Sandwich yet and that big delays for the upgrade are expected from manufacturers like Motorola, does that come as a surprise? Give the releases some time to breathe, Google!

Whether you're ready or not, here are some of the rumored features in Android 5.0 Jelly Bean.
